Brent brings almost three decades of combined legal and criminal justice experience to his practice as an Attorney-at-Law.

The primary institutions that comprise the criminal justice system are the Police, Prosecution and Defence Lawyers, the Judiciary, and the Prisons. Having begun his career in 1994 with a decade-long stint as a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Prison Service, Brent D. Winter grounded his professional pursuits in a working knowledge of the penal system. This fuelled his appreciation for the law, as he was able to gain first-hand experience with individuals who had run afoul of the law. This appreciation would propel his career as a public prosecutor and now, Attorney-at-Law in private practice.

Five years after entering the Prison Service, Brent began reading for the LL.B. degree as an external student with the University of London in 1999. He went on to graduate from the the Hugh Wooding Law School in 2004 as one of two graduates that year to attain the prestigious Legal Education Certificate of Merit, and was later admitted on the Roll of Attorneys-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Judicature of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

In January 2005, the St. Mary’s College alum joined the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) as a public prosecutor and cut his teeth on the summary court circuit. In his seminal years as a prosecutor, Brent worked with various police agencies as part of the investigative and prosecutorial process. In early 2008, the erstwhile DPP assigned him to prosecute at the Criminal Assizes (High Court). This gave Brent the opportunity to work alongside and against some of the finest criminal legal minds in the country. He spent in excess of eight years prosecuting at the High Court until demitting office as a Senior State Counsel (Ag.) in 2016.

The allure of private practice always attracted Brent and his entry into this arena saw him join the Chambers of long-standing Barrister, Evans L. Maundy, Esq. Brent’s past experience and work-ethic enabled him to blend smoothly into the world of civil litigation and achieve early success.

Brent has a particular passion for the field of public law, where he is able to challenge aspects of criminal law in the civil arena by bringing applications for judicial review, habeas corpus and constitutional motions. Towards this end, he furthered his post-graduate education at The University of the West Indies and in June 2019, was admitted to the Degree of Master of Laws (Public Law).

At this stage of his career, Brent holds the distinction of having worked in or closely with every arm of the criminal justice system. He is also a fearless advocate for integrity in service. As his track record illustrates, he has prosecuted persons of all stations in life including senior police officers, military personnel and fellow legal practitioners.

Over the years, Brent maintained an avid interest in teaching and writing about the law through lecturing and penning op-eds published in the press. When not wearing his robes, he is a fervent sport and fitness enthusiast; and one of the founding members of the Trinidad and Tobago Lawyers Football Club (TTLFC).
